Title: ‘A peaceful conquest? German and Irish immigration to the Midwestern United States, 1850-1900’

Synopsis: This paper explores German and Irish immigration to the American Midwest during the second half of the nineteenth century. Using a comparative methodology, the paper examines German and Irish immigrant communities in St Louis, Missouri and Fort Wayne, Indiana through a variety of economic, religious, political, social, culture and gendered lenses.

Dr Donlon’s talk will be followed immediately by the launch of her monograph, German and Irish immigrants in the Midwestern United States, 1850-1900 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). Invitation to book launch
