On Wednesday 25 February Jan Rigby of the Department of Geography spoke at a workshop hosted by the ESRI on the outcomes from a Health Research Board funded project exploring the geography of health inequalities in Ireland. The main findings included a 6 fold difference in mortality rates between areas with the highest and lowest rates. The research team (including Mark Boyle, Ronan Foley, Chris Brunsdon, Martin Charlton and Dennis Pringle) have been experimenting with ways to visualise the overall mortality patterns in Ireland using cartograms, as shown below:
