Maynooth Geography Careers and Alumni Networking Event

by Brian Cregan
Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - 15:30 to 17:00
Rocque Lab

The Department of Geography at Maynooth are delighted to invite former and current students to our first alumni and careers networking event on Tuesday 9 April, 3:30-5pm in the Rocque Lab. For our alumni, we see this as an opportunity for old friends to connect, to network with other former postgraduate students on possible career opportunities, and to share advice with each other and with our current postgraduate and third year Geography students. For our current students, it is a great opportunity to see how Geography translates into exciting career opportunities, as well as learn tips about gaining employment from our alumni.

Following welcomes from the current head of Geography, Professor Gerry Kearns and Emeritus Professor John Sweeney, founding Director of the MSc in Climate Change, we have invited some of our former postgraduates to talk about careers, including the importance of geographical skills to employers; tips about writing strong cv's, and application letters, and doing a good interview; and using your geographical skills while on the job. Speakers will include:·

- Paul Alexander, Statistician, Head of Census Geography, Central Statistics Office, Editor of GeoNews for the Geographical Society of Ireland, PhD Geography Alumnus;
· Aideen Croasdell: Program Lead for the ArcGIS for Schools Program for Ireland and Northern Ireland, MSc GIS/RS Alumnus;
· David Flynn, Customer Success Manager, eSpatial, MA Geography Alumnus; and
· Victoria Ramsey, Project Consultant, McCloy Consulting Ltd, Belfast, MSc CC Alumnus.

This will be followed by informal discussion and reception, with staff and our graduates who can offer general advice on how their Geography degree contributes to the work they now do and how to develop a career in that field.
If you can please RSVP, that will give us a sense of how many people to plan for!

Finally: There is a lot on at Maynooth 9 April. If you want to come before 3:30pm, there is a Food Sovereignty festival at Maynooth starting at 10am, that is being organised by Dr Alistair Fraser. The event is free and open to the public, and will have music, stalls and workshops. Also, we invite all of our alumni and current to a special event at 6pm in Renehan Hall, where Professor Mary Gilmartin will deliver her professorial inaugural lecture on 'Placing Migration: the challenge of belonging in a precarious world'. This is the first professorial inaugural by a female staff member in the history of the department, so it is a special event! A reception will follow. Please RSVP to communications@mu.ie by 5pm Thursday 4 April.
