The IPCC AR6 and the goals of the Paris Agreement
Answering the question of whether the goals of the Paris Agreement are realistic or attainable, until recently apparently had to rely on gut feeling rather than solid scientific reasoning. This situation has changed remarkably over the past few years, and much of the research progress involved has been included in the IPCC AR6 published in August. I will illustrate some of the research challenges that arose, and I will show how the global community has responded and, as a result, has substantially reduced the uncertainty range in future global warming. It is now possible to assess the plausibility of attaining the Paris Agreement goals. I will in the end offer some thoughts on what this assessment might mean for the public discourse.
Biography
Jochem Marotzke is a Director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, where he heads the department “The Ocean in the Earth System”. He is also a Honorary Professor at the University of Hamburg. His research interests focus on climate variability and climate change, and particularly on the role of the oceans. He was a Coordinating Lead Author of both the Fifth and Sixth Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
