Thursday, December 12, 2019 - 16:00 to 17:30
Rocque Laboratory, Rhetoric House

The Department of Geography invites you to attend a seminar by Dr Eugene McGovern of TU Dublin, Geospatial Science - Let's get to the point

Dr Eugene McGovern graduated from Dublin Institute of Technology as a Geo-surveyor in 1976. Following a number of years working as a surveyor in areas from oil and gas exploration in the Middle East to pipeline construction in North Africa and civil engineering in Ireland, he began lecturing in DIT. During this time he set-up and managed a surveying business in Ireland and completed a PhD in satellite image processing in UCD. He currently chairs the SInRG research group in Technological University Dublin. With over forty years experience as a surveyor in the area of Geospatial Science, Eugene brings an in-depth perspective and examines the evolution, and the revolutions, that have brought Geospatial Science to where it is today.

From drones to satellites to robotics, surveyors have always been 'early adopters' and have enthusiastically embraced technological advances as they arrived. His presentation will also review some related research ongoing in TU Dublin and, with an eye to the future, he will look at where Geospatial Science is going particularly over the coming decade.
