    (1) Edgeworth Graduate Student Scholarships

The Department of Economics offers four partial scholarships worth €5,000 to those beginning the one-year MSc Economics Programme (MU Apply Code: MHH52) in September 2025.

Two-year MSc Economics students (MU Apply Code: MHH70) and part-time MSc Economics students (MU ApplyCode: MHH53) who have excelled in the first year of their programme are also eligible to apply for the scholarship in their second year.

Scholarships are merit-based. Two scholarships will initially be reserved for non-EU students. If no non-EU student receives the award, the resources will be directed to EU students (including those from Ireland).

    --------------------------------

Application deadline for students from Ireland and other EU countries: FRIDAY, JULY 4TH, 2025, 5PM (Irish time).

Application deadline for non-EU students: Closed FRIDAY, MARCH 7TH, 2025, 5PM (Irish time).

Note that if scholarships have not all been allocated after the initial deadlines, later applicants may be considered.

    --------------------------------

    Eligibility:

    1. Applicants who are applying for a scholarship for the one-year MSc Economics (MHH52) must satisfy the entry requirements of the MSc Economics programme and must achieve a minimum 2.1 overall result in their honours (level 8 or equivalent) undergraduate degree to be considered for the award. If the applicant has not graduated yet, the transcript needs to report all grades (marks) up to the most recent completed term of their studies.

    2. The scholarship application must be accompanied by an application for the MSc Economics Programme in the Department of Economics via the MU Apply online portal; a scholarship application only, without the programme application via MU Apply, will not be considered. Please see maynoothuniversityie.elluciancrmrecruit.com Only applicants who have uploaded all documents (application form, academic transcripts, reference letters) as part of the MU Apply online application process by the scholarship application deadline will be considered eligible.

    3. Applicants who are applying for a scholarship for the second year of the two-year MSc Economics (MHH70 or MHH53) must have completed the first year of their MSc degree, and must have achieved a minimum 2.1 overall result in that first year.

    4. Both Maynooth and non-Maynooth University graduates are eligible to apply.

    5. The scholarship may not be deferred.

    6. Successful applicants must confirm their willingness to fulfil ambassadorial duties for the Department of Economics such as attending University Open Days or assisting in advertising this scholarship to future applicants.

    Ineligibility:

Research master’s programmes are not eligible for support under the scheme. Applicants will not be awarded more than one scholarship from Maynooth University or another funder.

Value of the Scholarship and number of scholarships available:

The total value of the Edgeworth Graduate Student Scholarship for each student is €5,000. The scholarship amount (€5,000) will first be applied to awardees’ tuition fees in September 2025, with any remaining funds (due, for example, to receipt of a SUSI grant) paid in two instalments.

    Application Process:

Applicants for the Edgeworth Graduate Student Scholarship must write a short statement (around 150 words), outlining the applicant’s motivation for undertaking the Maynooth MSc Economics programme and for applying for the scholarship. This statement should be sent by email to Dr. Alexander Farnell ([email protected]), copying to Dr. Aedín Doris ([email protected]).

    Assessment:

Applications will first be assessed by the Department of Economics and other relevant staff within Maynooth University to ensure that eligibility requirements have been met. Eligible applications will then be reviewed by an academic panel chaired by the Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences of Maynooth University. Evidence of competence in mathematics, statistics and econometrics will be particularly valued in the assessment process.
