Mike Hogan Gilmartin

I loved my time in Maynooth. My studies had a huge impact on my life and career. I also met my wife in Maynooth University and we are now a family of four.
Maynooth has a fantastic community spirit and the location is one of the best in the country. I always felt equal and part of something special. My lecturers were inspiring and approachable.
The ability to critically think about the world we live in. Anthroplogy and Sociology has made me question everything. A lecturer of mine told me on my first day that the course would change how I look at the world forever. He was right. This has helped me in many aspects of my career.
It will set you on a path to a better understanding of the world we live in. Now more than ever, the world needs critical thinkers with an understanding of the past, present and future of humanity. Even if you're not sure what specific career path you want to take, this degree will benefit you no matter what job you seek.
During my time at Maynooth, I had a passion for radio. I got my first commercial radio job during my third year of my degree course. I presented overnight shows on Dublin’s FM104 and often went straight to lectures after my shift. I then got a job with Newstalk FM as a researcher and landed the positions of talk show producer and presenter in 98FM. I moved to Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio where I was a talk show producer and presenter and later produced the breakfast show. I then moved back to Newstalk to produce The Pat Kenny Show.
In 2023 I took a leap out of radio and into the world of communications where I am a Communications Specialist with An Garda Síochána.
There are many highlights which include industry awards and record high show ratings. I have won numerous national and international radio awards including PPI, IMRO and New York Festivals awards.
I work across both internal and external communications with An Garda Síochána. My aim is to keep those within the organisation connected and informed and to keep the public up to date with the great work being done across the country by the thousands of dedicated and passionate personnel.
Never stop learning. In media and communications, a graduate who has taken initiative to skill up on industry technologies and literature will have an advantage.
Never be afraid to bring ideas to the table. A good manager will take all ideas on board.
Believe in your ability and dream big.
