The Centre for Irish Language proudly congratulates two of its graduates who were recently the recipients of prestigious awards.
The Centre for Irish Language is delighted to announce that the TK Whitaker prize for the best MA thesis in Irish across NUI institutions has been awarded to, Micheál Ó Maoilchiaráin who recently completed the MA in Translation and Editing. Micheál’s thesis, completed under the supervision of Dr Brian Ó Catháin, examined the process of translating The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter to both standardized and dialectal Irish. It is intended that his thesis will provide a foundation for the translation of the remaining books in this series.
The Centre also congratulates Muiris Ó Fiannachta, who has been awarded the Ó Doibhlin Prize in Translation Studies for achieving the highest mark in the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Editing in 2023. This prize is named in honour of the renowned scholar, writer and translator, Monsignor Breandán Ó Doibhlin, who sadly passed away in September of this year. Monsignor Ó Doibhlin was a professor of Modern Languages at Maynooth University and a pioneer in the field of Irish-language translation.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Editing is a two-year part-time online course, aimed at students who already have a high standard of Irish, and who would like to improve those skills. Students are given the option of writing a thesis in the third year to achieve the MA qualification.
Graduates of the course are working in a broad range of roles such as translators, proofreaders, editors, lawyer-linguists, Irish language officers, teachers and lecturers. They are employed in state departments and organizations, in translation agencies, in schools and universities, in the media, and in publishing companies.
The Centre for Irish Language will be accepting applications for the 2024-25 course in the spring. The closing date each year is July and further information is available at this link.
