The Higher Diploma in Further Education (Level 8) is a qualification for initial teacher education (Further Education). This postgraduate course provides student teachers with the knowledge and skills required to confidently and competently work in a range of adult and further education settings. with learners in further education settings. Maynooth University offers this course is the only university which offers this course on a one-year full-time basis (over two days) and a two-year  part-time basis (over one day). It runs over 1.5 days a week on-campus, and includes a requirement for 100 hours of placement with supervision in a further education setting during the academic year.  As well as on-campus classes, students are required to spend time on placement with an education provider that delivers Further Education awards.

This year, we are particularly interested in speaking to existing FE educators who have many years experience but who do not hold a primary degree.  Graduates of the Higher Diploma in Further Education will be eligible to apply for route 3 registration as a teacher with the Teaching Council for the purpose of teaching in the further education sector. In accordance with the Teaching Council Registration Regulations 2016.

What Do Our Graduates Say:

"I would highly recommend doing the HDip in Adult and Further Education no matter what age the applicant is. The course lecturers are extremely friendly, welcoming and most importantly are very approachable, and there is a great sense of camaraderie developed from the very first day. The course is intensive but very interesting and nobody is left behind" - Dave Cunningham, Graduate.
