Turn to Teaching’s Dr Jerry O’Neill and Dr Gareth Burns were recently invited by the University of Algarve, Portugal to deliver a public lecture, as part of a series of seminars organised by the university’s Adult Education and Community Intervention Research Centre (CEAD).
The dialogical lecture focused on the role of adult education in widening participation in teacher education in the Irish and international context. Mirroring the philosophical and pedagogical values of the work, it adopted a dialogical and problem posing approach which created space for the pan European audience to explore the historical and socio-cultural roots of some of the enduring barriers to teaching for those from diverse and underrepresented groups.
It also considered the impact the work of Turn to Teaching is having in supporting participant in, through and beyond initial teacher education and how plans for the future of the work can create more differentiated responses to the discussed access issues and bottle necks.
