    Examinations

    How long are the exams?

All exams scheduled within the centrally timetabled exam period will have a duration of either 60, 90, 120 or 180 minutes. Durations will be clearly indicated on the timetable.

Do I have the option to choose whether I can sit my exams on campus or online?

No, students will have to sit their exams as scheduled on the timetable. Individual accomodations will be reflected on a students personalised timetable.

Where will on campus exams take place?

Exam venues will be on both the North and South campuses, they will be clearly indicated on the timetable. Maps can be found here.

What happens if I am sick on the day of my exam?

If you are sick on the day of your exam and cannot sit the exam you should make contact with the academic department administration office to let them know that you did not attend the exam and they can advise if there is any further information they need.

There is no need for you to notify the Examinations and Assessment Office.

You may have the opportunity to resit the exam in the August Supplemental/resit period. It is the responsibility of the student to register for the August Supplemental/resits. All relevant information is available on the Examinations and Assessment Office website.

What happens if I know in advance that I cannot attend my exam?

Exams will take place as per the published examination timetable and we cannot make any changes to this.

If there are exceptional reasons that mean you cannot attend your scheduled exam you are advised to contact the Examinations and Assessment Office ([email protected]) to arrange an appointment to discuss.

You may have the opportunity to resit the exam in the August Supplemental/resit period. It is the responsibility of the student to register for the August Supplemental/resits. All relevant information is available on the Examinations and Assessment Office website.

What happens if I am late for my exam?

If you are going to be late for your exam you should contact the Examinations and Assessment Office immediately on 01 708 3820 or by email ([email protected]) and they can advise on the next steps.

    Can exams be deferred?

If you cannot sit your exam, there is no need to defer or to deregister, you can simply not show up.  However it is good practice to let the relevant department know, so that they understand the situation.  You can then register to take the resit in Autumn. There are a very small number of modules where an Autumn resit is not allowed.  These are indicated on Course Finder. If you are in one of these modules, you should contact the Department and explain the situation.

What type of calculator can I bring into my exam?

Programmable calculators are prohibited. If you are unsure if your calculator is acceptable, please check the list of acceptable calculators here.

How do I transfer to other programmes?

    Transfer to other programmes

    Internal Transfers
Internal Transfer options are available to continuing undergraduate students from Maynooth University (and St. Patrick’s Pontifical University), who wish to transfer to another programme in Year 2 or beyond in Maynooth University.

Internal transfers normally have two forms:.

    1. Automatic Transfers - Such transfers are available to undergraduate students who are eligible for transfer into Year 2 or above of a different programme based on agreed published criteria. Application to transfer is not required. If the student meets the criteria, all possible options will be made available to them when they register online at the beginning of the new academic year. It will be up to the student which option they choose.
    2. Application to Transfer - Such transfers applies to undergraduate students who are not eligible for an automatic transfer route but may apply for an internal transfer based on exams results and subjects/modules already passed. These types of transfers are subject to space availability and student results. They will require Head of Department recommendation, and the Curriculum Office’s approval in conjunction with the Registry Transfer Committee where necessary. The Registry Transfer Committee is comprised of Registry staff from the Student Records Office, Examinations Office and Curriculum Office.

For further advice on internal transfers to another Maynooth University programme (Year 2 and beyond) which is not automatically offered to you, please contact the Curriculum Office at [email protected] or find more information at https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/curriculum

Please use your Maynooth University email and include your student number in all correspondence.

    External Transfers
All external transfers (students seeking admission to Maynooth University to any year) and transfer of Maynooth University students from Year 1 to Year 1 of another programme (where application via the CAO is required) are handled by the Admissions Office, who can be contacted at [email protected].
