Researching the Global Catholic Church from the periphery: archives, concepts and transnational connections

Thursday, October 17, 2019 - 18:00
Seminar Room, First Floor, Iontas Building, North Campus

This presentation discusses and offers reflections on Dr Morier-Genoud’s long-lasting research on the Catholic church in Mozambique. Drawing from his latest book, he discusses his research practice, design, and some findings on this particular case. He offers considerations about the difficulties and advantage of working away from the centre of Catholicism, he discusses archives and oral history, and refers to insights his research contributed about the history of the local Church, colonization, liberation war, and Revolution. Dr Morier-Genoud demonstrates that some shifts in the history of Global Catholicism actually began in the periphery, some of them in Mozambique specifically.
