Field seminar at Cruachain

Students at the main mound at Cruachain
Saturday, April 1, 2017 - 09:00 to 18:00
Cruachain, Tulsk, Co. Roscommon

Students taking the module LS69 Heroic Landscapes, as part of the BA Local Studies, will participate in a field seminar at the prehistoric and medieval complex at Cruachain (Rath Croghan). The complex contains archaeological sites dating from the Bronze Age to the medieval period (2200 BC–1500 AD). This became the focus of important early medieval literary and mythological association identified as the ‘capital’ of the province of Connacht and is the starting point for the great medieval story, the Cattle Raid of Cooley (Táin Bó Cúailnge), which features the great hero Cú Chulainn. The famous entry into the Otherworld—Oweynagat: ‘the Cave of the Cats’—is modified and accessible (if you’re adventurous enough!)
