Our friend and colleague Martin Charlton died last night. He was in hospital in England.

Every one of us who shared time with Martin will have our own memories to pour over with delighted smiles. He brought a real sense of fun to intellectual work because he loved it all so much. His contributions to spatial statistics and to spatial science are testified to by over 20,000 citations but also by generations of students and staff who have enjoyed his patient explanations and guidance. Martin was an intellectual giant as well as the warmest and most generous of colleagues.  Jan Rigby was prompted to recall Ted Kennedy's remark: "Never say in grief you are sorry he's gone. Rather, say in thankfulness you are grateful he was here."
