Despite well-structured phonic and spelling programmes some students are still struggling with basic literacy skills such as reading and/or spelling. Based on the most up-to-date research from neuroscience and educational psychology, we now know that the missing link for many of these students is the lack of effective visual processing. The ability to use mental imagery effectively was previously believed to be an inherent ability of ‘natural’ learners, but we now know we can help students successfully develop this for both literacy and numeracy. In an easy and straightforward way, the Jumpstarting™ Process gives teachers the tools for training students in this skill and works in conjunction with existing curriculum parameters.
