Bridget English, a recent PhD graduate from the Department of English, has just published a book based on her doctoral research in the Department. In The Irish Times Culture section Bridget has written about her research and the insights which attitudes towards death and dying give us on culture, communal beliefs, and the limits of human life.

“In Irish novels like James Joyce’s Ulysses the deathbed is not simply a place of ending but of birth and new life”, Bridget writes.

Bridget English’s book, Laying Out the Bones: Death and Dying in the Modern Irish Novel, is published by Syracuse University Press.
