LED Group have announced the winner’s of their Design Challenge.

Congratulations to Darragh Collopy, Stuart Scanlon, and Michael Lillis!

The design challenge overview:

The department of Design Innovation successfully partnered with LED Group, Irelands largest lighting technology manufacturer with over 300 employees. Over six weeks, 11 teams of 3rd year design students were given the opportunity to work on the next generation of downlight products for international markets. Mick Slein, managing director of LED Group, commented… “We were delighted to be associated with this project. I was pleasantly surprised at the high standard in the student’s designs and at least one of these is to be incorporated into our products,”

The project was coordinated by Lecturer Martin Ryan; “Sponsored industry projects offer invaluable experience for our students. They are motivated by the real possibility of seeing the projects commercialised whilst at the same time exposed to the real world pressures of business. It’s a win-win for both company and student. Companies may not have the resources or time to explore new initiatives and this offers a cost effective means of doing so.”

An industry sponsored student project involves collaboration between the Dept. of Design Innovation and industry partner for the purposes of product development. Typically design projects last from 6 to 12 weeks and go through 3 stages; Research, Conceptualisation and Final Design (Refinement of preferred concept). Each of these stages can offer value to an industry partner including, but not limited to;

  1. Additional consumer insights
  2. A broad selection of creative concepts (3 per team).
  3. One final well developed and presented concept per team.
