Biography

Dr. Edgar Galvan is Lecturer, above the bar, in the Department of Computer Science, Maynooth University. Prior to this, he held multiple senior research positions in University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin and INRIA Paris-Saclay. 

He is an expert in the properties of encodings, such as neutrality and locality, in Genetic Programming as well as a pioneer in the study of Semantic- based Genetic Programming. His research interests also include applications to combinatorial optimisation, games and software engineering. 

Dr. Edgar Galvan has independently ranked as one of the all-time top 1% researchers in Genetic Programming, according to University College London. 

He has received competitive research funding from a number of national and international funding agencies including a grant from the National Council for Science and Technology, Mexico to conduct basic research (2013 – 2016 , c. Euro 50K), a Marie Curie Fellowship funded by the Irish Research Council and the European Commission Marie Curie Actions via the FP7 COFUND Programme (2014 – 2017, Euro 267K). Named funded supervisor for the Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Foundations of Data Science (2019 – 2026, Euro 21M). He has also received grants from Maynooth University via the Research Enhancement Fund (2019 – 2020, Euro 9,450). In total, he has been responsible for c. Euro 517K. 

Edgar is or has acted as a senior scientific adviser for the National Council for Science and Technology, Mexico, the National funding agency of the French Government and the Irish Research Council. 

He has published in excess of nearly 70 peer-reviewed publications including 1 book, 10 journal articles, 39 top-A-rank conference papers and 4 book chapters. Edgar has over 1,200 citations and a H-index of 21. 

Dr. Galvan is, or has been, a programme committee (PC) member for all the main Bio-inspired Evolutionary Algorithms Conferences, including the ACM GECCO and the IEEE CEC, both top-A-rank conferences. He is one of the few researchers in Ireland that has served as PC member for these conferences (c.600 PC members for each conference).

During his research career, Dr. Galvan has co-supervised and graduated 4 PhD students. He is formally co-supervising 2 PhD students and fully supervising 1 PhD student. Moreover, he led the supervision of 1 Research Master Students and 2 Taught Master Students. All his 7 graduated postgraduate students published scientific papers in top-tier journals as well as in world-leading international conferences under his supervision, including 3 journal articles and 13 peer-reviewed top-A-rank conference papers.
