About Us

The Maynooth University Hamilton Institute was founded in 2001 with core funding from Science Foundation Ireland. Since that time, the institute has successfully secured additional competitive funding from sources such as SFI, PRTLI, and EU FP7 programmes.  Initially situated in the Science Building on the North Campus of the University, the institute moved to a larger space in Rye Hall in 2005 and then, in 2015, to a state of the art location in the PRTLI funded Eolas building where facilities include an RF shielded room.

In the years since its establishment, the institute has been active in a wide variety of research areas, with the application of mathematical and computational methods to real world problems a unifying theme of its work.  Through the efforts of former and current members, the institute has established a strong track record in fields such as: Communications; Systems and Control; Mathematical and Systems Biology; Machine Learning; Applied Probability; and Data Privacy and Security.  Institute research has led to publications in leading journals including: Automatica; IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control; IEEE Transactions on Information Theory; IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking; IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications; Nature Communications; and Science.

Graduate education has always been a core activity of the MU Hamilton Institute with 37 PhD students and 17 MSc (Research) students graduated since 2003.  The institute, in collaboration with the Centre for Telecommunications Value Research (CTVR) in Trinity College Dublin, established the Network Mathematics Graduate Programme (funded under PRTLI 4) and was actively involved in the national Telecommunications Graduate Initiative (funded under PRTLI 5).  The institute currently co-hosts the SFI Centre for Research Training in Foundations of Data Science, a €22M joint MU, UL and UCD initiative co-sponsored by industry and enterprise in Ireland. This graduate school will see over 140 doctoral students trained between 2019 and 2027.

Since its foundation, the MU Hamilton Institute has run active seminar and visitor programmes and organised numerous conferences and workshops.  In the past, the institute has hosted and established links with leading researchers from institutions such as MIT, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Yale University; TU Berlin and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI).
