Welcome to French Studies in the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SMLLC)
French has been studied at Maynooth since the foundation of the college in 1795. Maynooth University students enjoy studying French in a friendly, supportive environment at non-beginner level (Leaving Certificate H4 in French or equivalent recommended), or at beginner level (no minimum requirement).
With over 200 undergraduates and a number of masters and doctoral students studying here at any time, French has a high profile in higher education and attracts students from all over the country.
What distinguishes French at Maynooth is a strong tradition of teaching the French language, literature and culture, with much teaching taking place through the medium of French (for those taking the non-beginner stream). Our programmes cover periods from old French to the present day, and a span of French-speaking regions around the globe. Lecturers are all research active, and the research has a direct impact on teaching
While gaining a thorough grounding in the language, you will also acquire a familiarity with the vibrant cultures and diverse histories associated with this world language. French opens a world of exciting opportunities.
Fáilte go dtí an Roinn Fraincise in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Má Nuad, ceann de na ranna ollscoile is sine sa tír, a bunaíodh an tráth a bunaíodh an ollscoil i 1795.
Bíonn os cionn 200 fochéimí agus roinnt mac léinn máistreachta agus dochtúireachta i mbun staidéir anseo de ghnáth. Tá cáil ar an Roinn i measc institiúidí ardoideachais agus meallann sí mic léinn chuici ó gach cearn den tír.
Tá traidisiún láidir againn i múineadh na Fraincise, agus i litríocht agus i gcultúr na Fraince, agus i bhFraincis a mhúintear mórchuid den chúrsa. Tá gach ball den Roinn i mbun taighde agus bíonn tionchar díreach ag an taighde sin ar an teagasc.
