Extreme temperature events in Dublin up 20% in eight years

Professor Andrew Parnell of the Hamilton Institute recently had a paper published in the journal Environmetrics which characterises extreme temperature events in Dublin over the last 40 years.  Working with collaborators in UCD and Met Eireann they were able to use a mathematical framework called Extreme Value Theory which enables them to estimate how often extreme temperature events occurred during the period 1981 to 2010.  They then compared their findings with the period 2011to 2018 and discovered a surprising rise in the number of extreme temperature events.  They next plan to expand out their work to enable a complete picture of extremes across the entire Island of Ireland.
