In-person: Hamilton Institute Seminar room (317), 3rd Floor Eolas Building, North Campus, Maynooth University

Speaker: Professor Damien Thompson, University of Limerick

Title: "Embedding electronic function in self-assembled nanostructures"

Abstract: In this talk I will describe the difficulties encountered in designing materials at the nanoscale and present recent research in which massively parallel computer simulations are used to guide experiments to create novel materials for a broad range of device applications. I will describe our attempts to decipher design rules for the synthesis of organic thin films and molecular crystals that exhibit giant rectification of electrical current, memory storage, Boolean logic, Pavlovian learning, and power generation.

Bio: Prof Damien Thompson leads a research team in predictive materials design at the Bernal Institute and Department of Physics at University of Limerick. He is Principal Investigator in Modelling in the Science Foundation Research Centre SSPC.
