Richard Huddleson

I am an Assistant Professor in Spanish and Latin America Studies, with a particular emphasis on Translation and Catalan Studies.   In early 2021, I received my PhD from the Centre for Catalan Studies at Queen Mary, University of London, and joined UCLA as an Ahmanson Getty Fellow on the ‘Resituating the Comedia’ programme, exploring theatre from Early Modern Galicia and Mallorca. I was subsequently a postdoctoral researcher in Catalan on the ERC-funded project ‘Youth Engagement in European Language Preservation’ based in Scoil na Gaeilge at UCD, where I researched pivotal moments in Catalan youth culture throughout the twentieth century.   I have held visiting fellowships at the London School of Economics and the New York Public Library. Through seed funding, I have carried out archival visits to the Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca and the Casal de Catalunya in Buenos Aires. I have obtained research grants from the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, the Fundació Mercè Rodoreda, the Society for Theatre Research, and the Culinary Historians of New York. I have also held translation grants from the Institut Ramon Llull.   My academic inquiry centres on one key question: How do texts create, police, and transgress identities? From that starting point, my research focuses on: translation theory and practice; historical, literary, and cultural studies of the Catalan Countries; Contemporary and Early Modern Theatre in Iberia in context and in translation; and the role of translation in the GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums).
