Students in the lab

On March 4th, 2015 the Department of Chemistry hosted the annual Pharmaceutical Biomedical Chemistry (PBC) 1st year Students Poster Day.  This year the 1st year PBC students were assigned study topics from the overarching theme “The Chemistry of Modern Medicine”. During the poster session the students, organized in working groups, presented and discussed their work in front of a broad audience, made up of both, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and of academic staff.

This year poster presentations covered the origins, the sometimes serendipitous discovery, and the chemistry of different modern drugs, such as paracetamol, warfarin, diazepam, synthetic and natural opiates, platinum-based chemotherapeutics, and chloropromazine (CPZ). The posters and the students’ presentation skills were tested and marked by 2nd year PBC students, who were last years’ poster presenters. This year the competition was very fierce and we had 2 winning posters instead of one! The students awarded best poster in the 2015 event are, Caytlin Boylan, Joanna Kleibauer, Shane Behan for their work on “The Chemistry of Paracetamol”, and Marina Leahy, Newton Lawani, and Brian Allen for their work on “The Chemistry of Warfarin”.
