Funded PhD Studentship Opportunity

Friday, January 20, 2023 - 16:15

Applications are invited for funded PhD studentships in Materials Chemistry and Electrochemistry in the Department of Chemistry at Maynooth University. The project, which is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, involves the fabrication of new electrocatalytic materials that can be employed in the generation of green hydrogen through the splitting of water.  The research work will involve the synthesis and characterisation of the electrocatalytic materials, using methods, such as hydrothermal synthesis and electrospinning, and various analytical and surface characterization techniques. Electrochemical methods will be employed to test the performance of the electrocatalysts in the generation of green hydrogen and to study the mechanism of the water splitting reaction at the new materials.

The successful candidate will register as a Ph.D. student on the 4-year structured Ph.D. programme in Chemistry and will join well-equipped and dynamic research groups, directed by Professor Carmel Breslin, Dr. Eithne Dempsey and Dr. Vincent Fagan at Maynooth University.

Applicants should have, or expect to have, a first class or upper second class honours degree (B.Sc.) or a M.Sc. degree in chemistry, physics, or chemical engineering.

A start date in March or April 2023 is anticipated. Further information on the department and research groups can be found at

Applicants should send a cover letter and CV, including the names of 2 referees (as a single pdf file) to on or before 15 February, 2023.
