Podcast: Meet The Education Researcher: The idea of public education by Professor Carl Anders Säfström

Educational philosopher Carl Anders Säfström (Maynooth University) joins us to talk about the past, present and future of ‘public education’. We trace the origins of the idea from post-war Europe back to the writing of John Dewey, and even further to the Ancient Greek ‘Sophists’. Carl Anders also considers how models of public education differ dramatically between countries – highlighting recent reforms of Swedish schooling as a cautionary example.

New Book by Professor Carl Anders Säfström

Professor Carl Anders Säfström, director of theCentre for Public Education and Pedagogy in Maynooth University, latest book entitled 'A Pedagogy of Equality in a Time of Unrest' will be published on 8 September 2020. A Pedagogy of Equality in a Time of Unrest addresses education and teaching as fundamental democratic forms of equality. It offers an alternative route for democracy and education and shows how particular shifts in ways of thinking and practising can lead to an education in favour of a democratic life for all. This book will be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of the philosophy of education, history of education, critical sociology of education and educational theory. It will also appeal to activists and those interested in emancipatory forms of education and pluralist democracy.

Forms of Formation: A Pedagogical-Philosophical Inquiry into Embodied Tensions around Gender and Social Equality in the Classroom

Financed by: Swedish Research Council Grant, 5.4 million SEK (€550k) 2020-2024 Tensions around gender and social equality are commonplace both in societal debates and the classroom and often include reference to the body (e.g. headscarves, skin colour, gestures, touch and comportment). To date, pedagogical research has been mainly focused on dialogic approaches to these tensions and little attention has been paid to their bodily and sensory aspects. The present study combines feminist theory with sensory studies in examining embodied expressions and the social and cultural coding of sensual experiences in the classroom. Project members: • Profesor Sharon Todd, Maynooth University • Senior Lecturer Elisabet Langmann, Södertörn University, Sweden • Senior Lecturer Lovisa Bergdahl, Södertörn University, Sweden
