Dept of Applied Social Studies welcomes the announcement by the Irish Government of State recognition of Travellers as an ethnic group
We congratulate our Traveller students, friends and colleagues and acknowledge their work over many years for Traveller rights and recognition. We acknowledge also the work of associates of the Department, past and present, who have been involved in highlighting the discrimination faced by Travellers in their daily lives and in working with Travellers to address these issues at a national, regional and global level.

Students condemn assassination of human rights defender in Guatemala
On Monday 21st November Maynooth students met with human rights lawyer, Rafael Maldonado, of the Calas organisation, which has been representing and defending environmental activists in Guatemala.

Maynooth University academic elected first Irish president of a UN treaty body
Anastasia Crickley,former head of Maynooth University Department of Applied Social Studies, is the first Irish person to lead a UN treaty body, which are international committees of independent experts that monitor states’ implementation of international human rights treaties.

Ireland Votes 2016
With the Irish general election fast approaching, increasing amounts of airtime are being devoted to discussion of the campaign issues and the progress of candidates in various constituencies across Ireland. Within this context, a public discussion will be held next Tuesday 16 February in the Whiteboard Room, John Paul II Library at 1-2pm, hosted by the Maynooth Centre for European and Eurasian Studies, on the primary election issues, the way the campaign has unfolded thus far, and its possible outcomes. Speakers will include Catherine Murphy TD Social Democrats (North Kildare); Prof Mary P Corcoran, Head of the Sociology Department; Dr Mary P Murphy of the Sociology Department and Claire McGing of the Geography Department. The event will be chaired by Prof John O'Brennan, Director of the Maynooth Centre for European and Eurasian Studies, and it is free and open to all to attend.

Maynooth University Awards Honorary Doctorates to Emily Logan and William Desmond
