We invite you and colleagues to attend a seminar hosted by the Centre for Rights, Recognition and Redistribution, NUI Maynooth. The session ‘Indigenous and Minority Rights: Locally & Globally’ will take place in Renehan Hall, South Campus, on the afternoon of September 2nd.
The seminar will be led by Jose Francisco Cali Tzay, from Guatemala, President of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination - the first Indigenous person to be elected as president of a UN Treaty Body. Francisco will reflect on his work as an indigenous leader, CERD's work for indigenous peoples, his own experience as a member of the Committee and his hopes, as President, for the future of CERD.
Responses, focusing on the local context, will be provided by Martin Collins (Pavee Point), Brigid Quilligan (Irish Traveller Movement) and Monika Makulova (Roma Project).
We anticipate that this will be a useful opportunity to continue the focus on minority rights, including Traveller and Roma rights, to begin to focus on Ireland's next report to CERD and reflect on the outcome of Ireland's International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights July 2014 review in Geneva.

Please note that there are free parking spaces available on campus as term-time restrictions do not yet apply. Should you wish to join us a little earlier, seating will be reserved in Pugin Hall (next to the seminar venue), where there is reasonably priced food available.
