    Biography

    Dr MacIntyre is an environmental psychologist leading GoGreenNext (2024-2028), a €6 million euro Horizon Europe project, which focuses on potential climate change impacts on urban health. The project targets 4 pilot sites across Europe including Cork city. Previously, Tadhg led GoGreen Routes H2020 project (2020-2024) a 10.5 million innovation action which targeted six European cities. He currently supervises four doctoral students at Maynooth University.


    Tadhg studied psychology in University College Dublin where he graduated with a BA, a first class honours research Masters (1996) and subsequently a PhD in 2007. His research was supervised by the late Professor of Cognitive Psychology at UCD, Aidan Moran. He has published widely on topics including mental imagery and embodied cognition, mental health and well-being, green exercise and most recently on nature based interventions. He co-edited Physical Activity in Natural Settings (Routledge) in 2019, and more recently was co-editor of the Routledge Handbook on Mental Health in Elite Sport. He is a HCPC (UK) accredited psychologist and an experience applied practitioner. He is a visiting Professor at the Inland University of Applied Sciences in Norway and formerly a visiting lecturer at the Technical University of Munich.

    Research interests include metacognition and action, motor cognition, mental health and well-being, psychological resilience, nature-based interventions and nature-based solutions.

    Go Green Routes PI The objective of GOGREEN ROUTES is to position European cities as world ambassadors of urban sustainability. Our inspirational approach shifts the focus of NBS towards the co-benefits to multidimensional health-termed 360-Health. GOGREEN ROUTES transdisciplinary consortium will pioneer a unique approach augmenting NBS, urban design with the goal of fostering a positive human-nature relationship, flourishing nature connectedness and promoting citizen engagement through digital, educational and behavioural innovation. GOGREEN ROUTES components focus on nature-based enterprise (GROW), sustainable physical activity (MOVE), digital, cultural (FEEL) and knowledge innovation (KNOW). GOGREEN ROUTES fosters mental health and well-being by optimising human-nature interactions for all citizens. These innovations will increase the uptake and acceptability of NBS across “Cultivating Cities” (Burgas, Lahti, Limerick, Tallinn, Umea & Versailles), “Seed Cities” (Munich, Murcia region & Malta) and a “Cross-Pollination Network: (Beijing, Mexico, & Tblisi). An urban well-being lab, based on the living lab methodology will couple participatory approaches with the Big Data analyses. To advance knowledge, best practice and dissemination GOGREEN ROUTES will cluster with H2020 projects including those involving our partners (e.g. proGIreg, bluehealth2020, Connecting Nature). In addition, linking all open-sourced data to the OPPLA and Think Nature Hubs, delivering online resource (e.g. Urban 360-Health Toolkit, MOOC’s) and empowering citizens in an iterative process of co-creation will ensure perpetuation beyond the end of the project.     GetInNature_Coordinator Support Funding CS20211148 PI EI funding application (submitted) will fund meetings, researcher support, graphic design, consultancy support etc. This is the fifth time I would lead a proposal and I currently lead SC5-14-2019 Nature-Based solutions project GoGreenRoutes. Previous applications to H2020 all had EI support. Relevant expertise in environmental psychology and significant outputs in this field (Donnelly & MacIntyre, 2019) and experience with wider research networks with clustered projects and the Irish research community in nature-based solutions and nature-based interventions are key to the success of this proposal.     Forests for Health: Nordic Irish Perspectives PI A three day training workshop and think-in for Irish and Finnish partners in forestry and health sectors including academic partners, national agencies and key stakeholder groups.     EPA event funding PI The benefits and co-benefits from nature-based solutions and interventions are only beginning to emerge and offer a low-cost non-invasive approach to both treatment and prevention of mental health disorders, the promotion of physical health and sustainability. World Mental Health Day (Oct.10) is a key milestone to raise awareness of the potential pathways to supporting well-being and mental health within our communities. One key dimension of the nature-based approach is that it may overcome many of the traditional barriers to service provision relating to gender, inclusion and diversity and it aligns with the €300 million H2020 funding on nature-based solutions under H2020, which will be quadrupled under Horizon Europe. The Autumn school is a fitting initiative in the current context to address the nexus of societal challenges and to ensure the Irish research community is prepared to collaborate in innovating solutions. A theme of gender inclusion and diversity will see researchers from H2020 and EPA funded groups present on their methodological innovations. Experts from environment and health will be joined by ECRs and key national stakeholders over the three days within a hybrid learning ecosystem.     GoGreenRoutes Conference on Near Nature: Green Space, Sustainability and Environmental Justice PI The benefits and co-benefits from nature-based solutions and interventions are only beginning to emerge and offer a unique approach to many environmental and societal challenges with benefits for both human and environmental health and sustainability. In the European context more than €400 million horizon funding has been committed to nature-based solutions. In light of recent policy shifts, the Spring School is a fitting initiative in the current context to address the nexus of societal challenges including biodiversity loss, urbanisation and health challenges, and social inequities. The Irish research community is increasingly innovating in this field and one challenge which we will attempt to address is the role of inclusion and equity as we undergo a transition to a more sustainable future. Our own H2020 project, GoGreenRoutes has a cross-cutting theme of gender inclusion and diversity and we will support knowledge-sharing and capacity building during the tree days which focus on training to build capacity. International experts from environment and health will be joined by ESRs and key national stakeholders over the three days within a hybrid learning ecosystem.     EPA event support: “Awe”some Nature for Mental Health PI Nature and biodiversity are central to both human and environmental health. Accruing time in nature has co-benefits for health and well-being and notably, has potential additional benefits in supporting habit formation for sustainable behaviours, environmental protection and conservation activities. Emerging evidence from the GoGreenRoutes H2020 project at Maynooth University and a range of other projects in this field including EPA funded research helps us more clearly navigate how we can protect nature and how nature can benefit us. World Mental Health Day (Oct.10th) is a key milestone to raise awareness of the potential pathways in which nature supports our functioning and can promote social cohesion, mental health, well-being and a heightened concern for environmental stewardship within our communities. We explore the latest research and practice including Woodlands for Health project, coordinated by Mental Health Ireland, with support from Coillte and Sport Ireland. There is an imperative that we exploit the advantage of learning from the converging international evidence-based practice across a range of areas in nature-based solutions, interventions and therapeutic approaches. The Autumn school is a fitting initiative in the current context to address state of the evidence which as accumulated on the reciprocal benefits of human nature interactions.     Teaching Interests

    As program lead for the MSc. in Environmental Psychology, Dr. MacIntyre coordinates three modules including: Fundamentals of Environmental Psychology, Applied Research in Environmental Psychology and Advanced Topics in Environmental Psychology. In addition, he supervises the current MSc. projects and five doctoral students.

    The  Master’s aims to ensure graduates develop a critical understanding of how our actions shape the world and how our environments impact upon us. Environmental psychology is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the interplay between individuals and their surroundings. In addition to expert contributions from a range of sub-disciplines in psychology (e.g. cognitive, health, clinical, and research) contributions from geography (e.g. Dr Ronan Foley), biology (Dr John Devaney), digital marketing and environmental science are integral to the programme. Experts from EU and national projects contribute expertise to the programme. It has both Autumn and Spring School events, where International experts contribute to thematic elements. For example, the Spring 2023 event is entitled 'Near Nature: Green space and Environmental Justice.'
