Closest to the action in 1916: Dubliners speak up

Tuesday, March 29, 2016 - 16:45

Students from Maynooth University History Department contributed to the RTÉ ‘Reflecting the Rising’ on Easter Monday 28 March 2016 with a dramatised (and costumed) reading of contemporary evidence in the ideal setting of Court No. 4. Four Courts, Dublin. The production was directed by Dr Jacinta Prunty (head of department) and followed the stimulating lecture by Mr Justice John McMenamin, judge of the Supreme Court on the theme ‘Would Home Rule have delivered the same?’ to which the unanimous answer (by the audience) was no. The double session was hosted by Ray Kennedy of RTÉ.

From left to right (in the jury benches), with the parts they played in brackets, are: Warren Farrell (Mortimer O’Connell, Thomas McDonagh); Dinín Molloy (Eilis Ni Riain, Mary Walker); Kevin Flynn (Roscommon farmer, John Dillon MP); Grace Kennedy (Elsie McDermid, Mary McLoughlin); Jean-Baptiste Vasset (Thomas Moylan); Kenn Fitzpatrick (Sir Matthew Nathan, Joshua Manly).
