Biography
Seán Ó Riain is Professor of Sociology at the National University of Ireland Maynooth.
His research interests are in the sociology of work and employment, comparative political economy, inequality and social change and the global information economy.
Seán is the author of: The Politics of High Tech Growth: Developmental Network States in the Global Economy (Cambridge, 2004) The Rise and Fall of Ireland’s Celtic Tiger: Liberalism, Boom and Bust (Cambridge, 2014) and co-editor of The Changing Worlds and Workplaces of Capitalism (Palgrave, 2015).
He was PI for New Deals in the New Economy, a five year study of workplace bargains in Europe (www.maynoothuniversity.ie/newdeals), funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant.
He was a member of the National Economic and Social Council from 2011 to 2017.
His research interests are in the sociology of work and employment, comparative political economy, inequality and social change and the global information economy.

Research Interests
Research interests lie in the area of the socio-political construction of capitalism. Interested in particular in how economic sociology, sociology of work and employment and comparative political economy of capitalism intersect with Post-Keynesian economics, Feminist economics, Economic geography and other inter-disciplinary connections.
He has a strong interest in the intersection between work and working lives and the political economy of development, in the context of the informational and service society and economy, and how these shape and are shaped by processes of class, gendering and racialisation.

Prof. Ó Riain's current research fall broadly under the following headings:
- Pathways to Postindustrialism: A comparative analysis of Denmark and Ireland's 'growth and development' paths, including the prospects for egalitarian development in small open economies.
- Workplace Games, Careers and Justice: The working lives and employment of high tech workers in Ireland and Denmark, particularly in software.
- Varieties of Workplaces: Analysis of European datasets to examine the variety of forms of work organisation and employment relations, particularly examining Lean and Learning organisations of work across the EU-14
- Inequality, Solidarity and Social Change in Ireland: Includes various research projects on life histories and social change in Twentieth Century Ireland, health inequalities, labour market inequalities.
