Economics is a fascinating and challenging subject that is critical to the modern world never more so than at the present time.  It requires you to think deeply about the way the modern world functions and why. Economics provides students with outstanding analytical and problem solving abilities including numerical and computing ability as well as enhanced communication and presentation skills.  Employers value economic graduates highly.  There are, even in challenging times as these terrific job opportunities for good economic graduates in a variety of fields such as accountancy, finance and banking, public policy, the civil service, insurance, teaching as well as the opportunity to undertake further study.

The economists within the  department make up one of the leading group of research economists in Ireland and are actively engaged in research with interests spanning from Labour, Industrial Organisation, Finance, Public Economics, Electoral Reform and Macroeconomics. The group are ranked in the top 9% of all Economic Research Institutions worldwide.

Research and good teaching reinforce one another - in Maynooth our aim is to provide high quality teaching within a friendly and enjoyable academic environment.

Successful students emerge with an ability to think analytically which will stand to them in a range of employments. They can be expected to secure employment in civil and public service administration, journalism, public relations, banking and other financial services, as well as in economic consultancy, economics units of public and private sector organisations and in economic research. Economics is also a good second-level teaching subject.

Graduates from our postgraduate programmes have been successful in gaining employment in areas allied to their training. They work in financial institutions in Dublin, London and New York and in other private sector activities. Our graduates have also gained employment in the public sector with the Central Bank and the Department of Finance.
