The Maynooth University Intersectionality Working Group is hosting the Inaugural Intersectionality Lecture on Thursday 20th May 2021 at 3pm.

Our speaker, Dr Christen A. Smith (University of Texas at Austin and founder of the Cite Black Women Collective) will present a talk titled "The Critical Praxis of Citing Black Women".

Dr Christen A. Smith is Associate Professor of Anthropology and African and African Diaspora Studies and the Director of the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, and the founder of Cite Black Women, a movement that seeks to bring attention to the racial and gender politics of citation in academic and intellectual life. Her research focuses on the gendered dimensions of anti-Black state violence and resistance in the Americas, examining the immediate and long-term impact of police violence on Black communities, particularly Black families and Black women. She is the author of Afro-Paradise: Blackness, Violence and Performance in Brazil (University of Illinois Press, 2016).
