Virtual Research Environment Project: Student Testimonial

The datasets detail both Irish students who attended colleges in Europe, and Irish soldiers who were regimented in Europe. Most interestingly, the historical archives contained a previously uncharted dataset of Irish students who attended King’s Inn in London in the Pre-Cromwellian era (1603-1633). The VRE was modified to allow this dataset to be queried, and allow users to peruse records of Irish men who had studied Law and in some cases, attended the bar. To provide context on this, Meadhbh met with Trinity historian Brid McGrath, who helpfully described the backgrounds and circumstances of the scholars which allowed them to attend university at this turbulent time in Irish history. This allowed Meadhbh to model the data effectively and incorporate it into the project. Meadhbh is a final year undergraduate in Maynooth University, studying both Mathematics and Computer Science.
