On 28–30 April 2025, WHO/Europe, in partnership with the Government of Ireland, Socialstyrelsen (Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare), and Durham University, hosted an international symposium at UN, Copenhagen. The event brought together a diverse group of experts, policymakers, practitioners, and thought leaders to explore innovative approaches to health workforce modelling and optimisation. Our Co-Director Prof. Mac MacLachlan attended this important event.
With health systems under growing pressure from workforce shortages, ageing populations, and shifting service demands, the symposium provided a timely platform to discuss data-driven strategies for workforce planning in a rapidly evolving health care environment. Over three days, participants shared case studies, debated emerging challenges, and examined lessons from other safety-critical industries.
A key outcome of the event was the decision to establish a Community of Practice for the European Health and Care Workforce — creating an ongoing collaborative space for knowledge-sharing, practical support, and the exchange of innovative workforce planning solutions. WHO/Europe will soon publish a summary report of the symposium’s insights, case studies, and recommendations, alongside a policy brief for decision-makers.
This important next step will support countries across the WHO European Region in building a resilient, future-ready health and care workforce.
