Seminar on the EU-UK legal relationship(s)
More than one year after the end of the Brexit transition period and the entry into force of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, post-Brexit EU-UK relations have begun to take shape. This seminar aims to delve into these new legal relations from different angles, by paying attention to the existing framework and the potential for future developments. These include, but are not limited to, questions of governance, substantive law (notably the TCA, but also data protection, human rights and equality, etc), wider implications for EU and UK external relations, the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, and constitutional issues.
This seminar follows three earlier seminars – held in Leuven in November 2017, Edinburgh in November 2018, and online in June 2021 – which had a similar focus.
The seminar will take place in Maynooth on the afternoon of 24 and the morning of 25 June 2022. Participants are expected to cover their own travel costs; accommodation and meals will be provided by the organisers.
This call is particularly aimed at, but not limited to, early career researchers. We are also very keen on the involvement of scholars who are primarily active in one of the substantive areas of law which have an EU dimension (e.g. labour law, financial law, administrative law, competition law…).
Selected contributions to this seminar will be published in a special weekend edition for EU Law Live (https://eulawlive.com/). Contributions will be ca. 1500 words in length. The contributions selected will have to be submitted by 20 June 2022, i.e. in advance of the seminar in order to ensure timely publication. The organisers will then work with the contributors to ensure a high quality of the special edition. The selection will happen on the basis of quality, thematic fit, and timely completion.
Discussions will be organised in panels. Each panel will be joined by a discussant from either Leuven, Maynooth, or Edinburgh.
