Shane McLoughlin

Biography

Dr Shane McLoughlin is an SFI and Intel funded Post-Doctoral Researcher for LERO (The Irish Software Research Institute) at National University of Ireland Maynooth, under PI Professor Brian Donnellan. He holds a PhD in Information Science from University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland, sponsored by the HW Wilson Foundation. The mixed-method study in the domain of Social Informatics and Human Information Behaviour examined the role of Information Communication Technology on social aspects to Human Information Behaviour. The thesis was influenced by the Social Capital theory of Prof Nan Lin, who also acted as external examiner.

Shane’s current research examines the development and adoption of disruptive digital innovations with societal benefit. He focuses on approaches to urban data/IoT and Autonomous Vehicle service development, and related sustainable business models. In this respect, Shane have been case studying the EU H2020 project ‘Organicity’ as a 'Living Lab' approach to support public innovation, and has been carrying out use-cases on the urban IoT/Data ecosystem it supports. Organicity is a cross-European funding, support and IT capability mechanism for experimentation of new urban IoT/Data solutions that address pressing city challenges. Furthermore, Shane is exploring impact, adoption and business model development of Autonomous Vehicle systems and services for the Older Adults market. This involves ethnographic driven research into older adults in relation to mobility across differing European markets. Shane is Collaborator on a SFI Science Policy project examining peer review in relation to grant funding (award: ‘17/SPR/5319’) led by PI Professor Kalpana Shankar at UCD. As Collaborator, he is contributing to Science Policy & best practice in the context of peer review for grant funding of industry-academic collaborations.

Shane employs a variety of theory, as well as both qualitative and quantitative methods in his research. He has lectured on a variety of modules concerning socio-cultural and economic aspects of ICT on society, ranging from; Human Information Behaviour, ‘Social Computing’, ‘Information Society theory’, ‘Information Literacy’, ‘Social Informatics’, ‘Systems Design & Analysis’ to methodologies for 'Digital Innovation'.
