Dr Katy Brown

Biography

Dr Katy Brown (she/her) is an Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Media Studies at Maynooth University. Her research focuses on the mainstreaming of the far right, centring principally on the role that mainstream actors play in normalising far-right discourse.

Her current project examines media reporting on the far right across Ireland, France, Italy and the UK. By analysing broadsheet coverage of these groups and interviewing journalists, the aim is to co-create guidelines for ethical reporting which counters rather than normalises far-right politics.

Katy completed her PhD at the University of Bath in 2023, where she looked at the mainstreaming of the far right during the Brexit referendum. She has published articles on the topics of mainstreaming, far-right discourse and populism, and she has a forthcoming book in the Cambridge University Press Elements series on combining different forms of discourse analysis.
