Dr Denis Murphy

Media Studies

Assistant Lecturer

I an an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Media Studies, where I currently teach modules on media and cultural labour, media and cultural theory, and media publics.

Before joining the Department of Media Studies I worked at the School of Creative Arts at Trinity College Dublin as a Government of Ireland Post-Doctoral Research Fellow researching the labour history of Irish film and television production, funded by the Irish Research Council. This was a continuation of my PhD research at Dublin City University's School of Communications.

Prior to joining the academic community, I was a media practitioner for over 20 years working  as an editor, writer, producer and director in various screen production sectors including advertising, on-air promotion, news promotion, station branding, programme promotion and corporate multimedia production. I edited the short film Right Now Ladies And Gents (dir. John Paul Murphy, 2004), and co-produced and co-directed the documentary short The Bookbinder's Daughter (2010).

Research interests include creative labour, screen policy, and media industries, from a political economy perspective. My book Screen Workers and the Irish Film Industry will be published in 2024 by Liverpool University Press.
