Biography

Dr. Dania Movia is a dynamic Assistant Professor in Biomedical & Health Services at the Department of Biology, Maynooth University. She also serves as Principal Investigator at the Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research, where her research work focuses on advancing the respiratory research field while moving away from animal testing. In addition, Dr Movia holds the position of Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Discipline of Radiation Therapy, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, further solidifying her presence in the Irish academic and research communities.

Dr Movia's academic journey began with a degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies, which she earned from the University of Trieste, Italy, in 2007. She went on to obtain her PhD from Trinity College Dublin in 2012. Trinity College later conferred upon her a Special Purpose Certificate in Academic Practice in 2018, and a Master of Arts (jure officii) in 2023 as a recognition of her ongoing contributions to the College.

A dedicated member of numerous esteemed professional organisations, Dr Movia plays a key role in shaping the future of cancer research and alternatives to animal testing in Ireland. Her affiliations include the Irish Lung Cancer Alliance (ILCA), Cancer Trials Ireland, the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR), and the European Society for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EUSAAT), the European 3Rs Society that actively promotes the implementation of the 3Rs Principle (Reduce, Refine and Replace) in animal research. She also lends her expertise to the scientific advisory panels of Animal-Free Research UK and FRAME-UK and contributes to the COST Action CA21139 initiative - “3Rs Concepts to Improve the Quality of Biomedical Science (IMPROVE).”

With over 50 peer-reviewed publications to her name, Dr. Movia is a prolific contributor to scientific literature. In her editorial roles, she has served as Guest Editor for Animals (MDPI) and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, and she co-edited the book "Cancer Cell Culture" in the "Methods in Molecular Biology" series published by Springer Nature. This work, featuring contributions from 38 international experts, stands as a testament to her collaborative spirit and leadership in the field. She currently serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Pharmacology, continuing to influence and guide cutting-edge research.

Dr Movia is committed to scientific excellence through her diverse roles and her dedication to fostering innovation through sustainable animal-free research in the biomedical field.

Research Interests

Dr Dania Movia is a passionate advocate for transforming biomedical research by reducing and replacing animal testing through sustainable research as well as the education of young scientists on new preclinical technologies. Her work is driven by a commitment to advancing science in a more sustainable direction, focusing on the development of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) designed to replace animal studies in the fields of lung cancer and lung toxicity research.

As the founder and lead of the Humane Biomedical Research Group, Dr Movia has established Ireland’s first wet-lab dedicated entirely to animal-free respiratory research. The lab's groundbreaking mission is to accelerate the translation of preclinical data into effective clinical treatments for patients with respiratory diseases - without the use of animal experimentation. Through this pioneering initiative, Dr Movia aims to foster long-term therapeutic responses in patients, ensuring that innovations in research directly benefit people's care.

Her efforts have garnered international recognition and substantial financial support, with over €23 million in research funding, including more than €2 million allocated directly to her as Principal Investigator. This funding comes from a wide array of prestigious national, European, and international organizations, including the Irish Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland, the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, Animal-Free Research UK, and the European Commission.

Dr Movia’s leadership in humane science is not only advancing the field but is also shaping the future of biomedical research by setting a new standard for ethical, innovative, and sustainable approaches to disease treatment.
