Important information that you will need for second year registration for English in September 2016

Please read carefully

(Note: This information applies only to students who are in MH101 First Arts, and not to students who entered English Major in September 2015 through the code MH114.)

As you may know, there are going to be changes to the structure of the second and third years of the Maynooth University Arts Degree, beginning in September 2016.  These will mean that all students coming in to the second year of their BA in September will be able to choose a Double Major degree (as now), or to choose a Major/Minor combination.   (Some subjects will offer a single Major degree; English does not offer this option.)

Every module offered by English is worth 5 credits.

You will have three possible options for second year English:

OPTION 1) IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A MAJOR IN ENGLISH, WITH A MINOR IN ANOTHER SUBJECT, YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE 40 CREDITS IN ENGLISH AND 20 CREDITS IN YOUR OTHER SUBJECT

OPTION 2) IF YOU WANT TO CHOOSE A DOUBLE MAJOR DEGREE, YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE 30 CREDITS IN ENGLISH AND 30 CREDITS IN YOUR OTHER SUBJECT

OPTION 3) IF YOU WANT TO TAKE ENGLISH AS A MINOR SUBJECT, WITH A MAJOR IN ANOTHER SUBJECT, YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE 20 CREDITS IN ENGLISH AND 40 IN YOUR OTHER SUBJECT

However, in addition, any student in English may take an elective course in second year, which means that you drop 5 credits in English.   See below for some further info on choosing an elective.

Note on Creative Writing (EN257):  This is an option available to English Major students only.   These classes have to be kept at a small size, so numbers may have to be capped.

Elective courses:  If you take an elective course, this will be offered outside your subject departments.  You will drop 5 credits in English and 5 credits in your other subject in order to take an elective course.   Elective courses run over both semesters are worth 10 credits.

We don’t yet have the full details on electives for second year next year, but to get a sense of what was offered last year see:
