Annual Aquinas Lecture 2019: Prof. Andreas Speer 'Officium sapientis: The Pursuit of Wisdom and the Office of the Wise'
Ordering things rightly and governing them well – that is what we call wisdom. Thomas Aquinas adopts this Aristotelian definition of philosophy, and makes it the starting point for reconsidering the place of philosophy and theology in view of new ideas concerning some of the so-called “big” questions which triggered the debates at the universities of his time. But what can we learn from those debates of the past? The lecture will point to some important aspects, in which a close reading of Thomas’ texts and a careful reconstruction of his arguments might help us to understand the historical context of those questions. Moreover, Thomas offers interesting answers worth reading and discussing even today. What drives us when we strive for knowledge and understanding? Which responsibilities do we have concerning our knowledge? To assume responsibility is the task of the wise.
