Margaret Anna Cusack- The Nun of Kenmare

Monday, January 23, 2017 - 13:15

Margaret Anne Cusack was a controversial figure in the nineteenth century.  A convert who joined the Poor Clare order, she became a prolific writer and subsequently became known as the ‘Nun of Kenmare’.  She was extraordinarily successful at fund raising and gathered large amounts of money for famine relief, building and church related projects.  She railed against perceived injustices both secular and religious which gained her many enemies.  She was often attacked and criticised for short circuiting established ecclesiastical routes in pursuit of her ambitions. Opposition to her stymied her later ambitions and disillusioned she left the Catholic Church.
