2019 Conference on Chinese National Identity

An international conference was held in Maynooth University on 11 and 12 October 2019. The theme of the conference is Chinese National Identity in the Age of Globalization. It was organised by Chinese Studies Department within the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
The conference was opened by Professor Arnd Witte, Head of School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. 13 Contributors from Germany, Ireland and China presented their papers during the two-day event, addressing a wide range of issues central to national identity in the context of Chinese culture, politics and society, and explores a diverse set of topics including the formation of an embryonic form of national identity in the late Qing era, globalisation and national identity, the interaction and discourse between ethnic identity and national identity, the influence of popular culture on national identity, and identity construction among Chinese migrants in foreign countries. It offers a distinctive contribution to our knowledge and understanding of national identity.
