The MSc acts as a gateway to the PhD which is the main entry degree for careers in research and third level teaching. However, many MSc and PhD graduates take up employment in areas such as industry, commerce, banking and finance, insurance, software development, process engineering or education.

A 2009 study in the US found that the best three jobs in terms of income, work environment, and other factors were mathematician, actuary and statistician, all jobs suited to mathematics and statistics graduates.

For more information about jobs in mathematics or statistics, see:

and the links in the ‘More Information’ section at the end of the last webpage.

Staff of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Maynooth University are happy to advise you on career-related matters.

Research applicants wishing to commence studies before November 2024, please register your interest here.

Interested students should contact the Postgraduate Course Director in the first instance.

The Department has exchange agreements under the EC SOCRATES programme with a number of European universities. Students may spend up to half of one year at another university under this programme, provided that a suitable programme of studies is arranged.

Financial aid is available in the form of Irish Research Council awards and Departmental tutorships. Occasionally funding is available for specific projects from other agencies.
