Dr John Paul Newman

Biography
Dr John Paul Newman is Associate Professor in Twentieth-century European History. He is interested in the modern history of the Southeastern and East-Central Europe, with a particular focus on Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Macedonia. His first book, Yugoslavia in the Shadow of War: Veterans and the Limits of State-Building, 1903-1945, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2015. He is currently working on a study of Croatian General Josip Jelačić, the Habsburg Military frontier, and the intersections of national and imperial identities in nineteenth-century Central Europe (under contract with Oxford University Press).
Research Interests
I am interested in the modern history of the Balkans and East-Central Europe, with a particular focus on Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. I have published on veterans of the First World War, paramilitary violence, and the larger legacies left by war in the region. Recently, I have been working on a large research project on victorious societies and cultures of war victory in twentieth century Europe. I am also interested in the history of disability and disabled war veterans in Central Europe and the Balkans, and the comparative histories and historical trajectories of Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1993. I welcome proposals from potential research students in any of these or related fields.
