Biography

Jacinta Prunty has lectured at Maynooth University since 1998 having previously taught at University College Dublin. Her teaching and research interests span urban, social and cartographic history, with a particular focus on the mapping of towns and on the town itself in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Ireland; on the history of religious life from the early nineteenth century and associated residential homes, schools and other institutions; Protestant and Catholic missionary activity; and on the management of religious archives. She welcomes inquiries from prospective research students interested in any of these areas, and would particularly like to encourage international and comparative dimensions to new research. A member of the editorial board of the Irish Historic Towns Atlas, she is co-author, with Paul Walsh, of the Galway/Gaillimh fascicle (2016) and, with Colm Lennon, series editor of the Dublin suburbs IHTA. Her 2017 major book titled The monasteries, magdalen refuges and reformatory schools of Our Lady of Charity in Ireland, 1853-1973 (Dublin: Columba Press, 2017), 613 pp, has been recently commended as 'Extremely detailed and well written, this work is based heavily on private, internal sources. It is a hugely significant and valuable contribution to our understanding of religious orders and the Catholic Church in Ireland' (NUI Selection Panel for the Irish Historical Research Prize 2019).  She is currently completing a chapter titled 'Caritas' for the Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism, vol. iv, 1830-1913 (edited by Carmen Mangion and Susan O'Brien). Her own PhD research at UCD, from which these various research threads developed, was on the slum geography of nineteenth-century Dublin and the mission of Margaret Aylward (1810-89), foundress of the Holy Faith sisters, of which congregation Jacinta is a member. She also holds a professional qualification in the teaching of history and geography from the University of Dublin, and in archives administration from Aberystwyth University.
