Faculty of Science and Engineering - Dean's Lecture 2023

Shedding Light on autism, brain injuries and global health using cutting-edge "NIRS" brain imaging technology.
Wednesday, May 3, 2023 - 18:30 to 20:30
TSI - Lecture Theatre 2 (ground floor)

Topic: "Engineering Solutions to Transform How, When and Where we Image the Brain"

Maynooth University is delighted to welcome Professor Clare Elwell to the campus give the 2023 Faculty of Science and Engineering Dean's Lecture.

Click below to watch the live stream of this event - the live stream will begin at 6.30pm on Wednesday, May 3:

Professor Elwell is an award-winning physicist specialising in Medical Physics at University College London where she is the Director of the Near Infrared Spectroscopy Group. Prof Elwell develops cutting-edge non-invasive techniques to study brain function. Her work is paving the way for defining early markers of autism, developing more targeted care following brain injury, and for better understanding brain development in global health settings. Prof Elwell is a world expert on the transformative brain imaging technology “NIRS”.

Prof Elwell will describe her pioneering work in using invisible near infrared light to probe the human brain. Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is a portable, wearable, low-cost brain imaging technology which can be used to study the brain in newborn babies, toddlers and adults in a range of different scenarios. For our 2023 Dean’s Lecture, Prof Elwell will show how NIRS is giving us new insights into autism, brain injury and global health issues.
