Biography

Michael Doherty joined the Department of Law at Maynooth University in 2013. He is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (LL.B), Queens’ College Cambridge (LL.M) and the Honorable Society of King’s Inns (called to the Irish Bar in 2002). He also holds a PhD (on Irish Trade Union Membership) from Trinity College Dublin. From 2004-2013, he worked at the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University, where he served as Director of Undergraduate Studies (2007-2010) and Director of Law (2011-2013). He lectures and researches in the areas of employment and labour law, industrial relations law and policy, and EU law.

He is a frequent media contributor on labour market issues. He is a National Rapporteur on Employment Law to the International Academy of Comparative Law. He is also a member of the Employment Law Association of Ireland executive committee and is a past President of the Irish Association of Law Teachers. He has been active  in working with civil society organisations, such as the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the Ballymun Neighborhood Project and the Northside Community Law Centre.

He is currently supervising a number of PhD students working on projects relating to employment rights, public procurement processes, youth unemployment and the implementation of human rights instruments, and welcomes applications from students interested in employment law and policy.

He is a passionate supporter of the Irish football team, which he has followed all over the world, and hopes, one day, to improve on his very basic Spanish.

Research Interests

Prof Doherty's research interests are in the areas of employment and labour law, industrial relations (especially the role of trade unions) and social partnership, as well as in EU Labour Law and Policy.

He has published widely in national and international outlets on these topics and presented his work at numerous domestic and international conferences. His work has focused, in particular, on collective employment rights, employee representation at work, the role of trade unions and the role of social pacts in socio-economic governance.

He has worked on a number of projects for the European Commission as part of European-wide research networks and as co-investigator on a major, EU-funded project on public procurement. His recent work has focused on the impact of the economic and social crisis on employment rights in the EU.

He sits on the editorial board of a number of national and international journals, including Employee Relations, the Journal of Law and Politics and the Irish Employment Law Journal and acts as a reviewer for many more (including Economic and Industrial Democracy and the Dublin University Law Journal).
