Thanksgiving Day at Maynooth University

Friday, November 23, 2018 - 16:15

The International Office team was delighted to share in the Thanksgiving Day celebrations this year with some of the American students on campus at O’Neil’s on Main Street Maynooth.

Celebrated annually in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November, the holiday was first witnessed in 1621 and continues to be an important American tradition today. Thanksgiving means many things to different people but for most, the holiday of Thanksgiving is synonymous with a festive meal with friends and family and of course turkey!

Students from all across the United States joined members of the International Office team to watch the traditional ‘Thanksgiving Day NFL Football’ game between the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions. The International Office’s very own Patty Hayden (a Chicago native) was flying the flag for the Chicago Bears who did just enough to win the famous annual event.

Maynooth University welcomes more than 200 American students on campus each semester and for many studying abroad represents the first time being away from their home family and friends during this important time of year. As well as welcoming students from the United States, the International Office was also delighted to host past MU students who had studied abroad themselves in America to share in the celebrations.

Food is a central part of this annual American holiday and while there was no turkey the students enjoyed traditional American finger food with an Irish twist (wings, fries and cocktail sausages!) while also getting to meet new friends and students during the game!
